Located on the southeast point of Harbor Island is the elegant Caribbean style beach home Dr. Frank and Carol Stout. Taking in the breeze just a few feet from Banks Channel, the rear garden space was kept clean and open by simply installing a Zoysia lawn with planters at the base of each column on the home. Both sides of the house are flanked by a grove of palmetto palms with dwarf pittosporum and Fatsia japonica planted underneath. A stone pathway meanders through the palms on both sides with a tall and narrow podocarpus hedge providing privacy along the property lines. Entertaining is a great pleasure for the Stouts, from their cozy loggia which contains a large custom fireplace, comfortable seating, and bahama shutter doors that open to panoramic views of the channel and the south end of Wrightsville Beach. Exiting the loggia from the side opposite the water is an intimate courtyard displaying a bronze fountain ‘Pan playing the flute’ amidst a bed seasonal flowers.

Across the street the Stouts have transformed a vacant lot into a stunning lawn terrace where they are occasionally found playing croquet or entertaining an overflow of guests from the main property. Entrances to both the lawn terrace and the entry courtyard of the main house, are designed to welcome guests with heavy structured arbors supporting both wisteria and confederate jasmine vines. The Stout property personifies casual elegance, the Harbor Island way.
